DevOps is something that concerns many in the software quality market. But what is it? Is it a sequel to CI/CD: ‘automate everything’? Or is it something to do with team composition, pairing and mobbing? Or is it like with Scrum, each organization filling it in with its own interpretation? Isn’t DevOps really just Scrum 2.0?
We can answer a resounding “yes” to all of these questions. But then, only if everything is “yes” can DevOps be properly implemented. After all, DevOps is about Culture, Automation, Lean agile processes, Measure, knowing and improving, Sharing knowledge; CALMS in short.
For any tester operating in modern development models within Agile or DevOps, this has implications. The tester is no longer just a Test Engineer, the role is increasingly changing to Quality Engineer: the team member who ensures that we maintain and improve quality in Product, Process and People. Starting from Business Analysis, through construction and TDD, CI/CD through BDD and ATDD, to Business Value testing and the question “What best serves the customer?”
